Future-proof your Timecode Buddy: wifi master and Timecode Buddy: mini tx

The beauty of the Timecode Buddy: system is as Timecode Systems tweaks and improves the firmware, users can future-proof their units by downloading the latest version via WiFi.

Here’s how to do this…

1. Connect your computer or iPad to Timecode Buddy: web view

  • Get your computer ready.
On your PC, laptop, MacBook or iPad, select your Timecode Buddy: wifi master’s WiFi network, e.g. TCBuddy151. Connect to it.
  • Enter your WiFi IP address number.
On your Timecode Buddy: wifi master’s LCD screen, scroll to the WiFi IP Address, e.g. 169.254.151.1. Enter this number into your web browser. The Timecode Buddy: web view page will appear on your device’s internet browser. This is how you set up your Timecode Buddy: wifi master to switch to your wireless network instead of creating its own.
  • Link your devices.
On the Timecode Buddy: web view page select the ‘Configure WiFi’ option. A screen will appear giving you the option to ‘scan for networks’. Select your home network. Enter your password when prompted. Be careful to be accurate, e.g. the iPad will automatically capitalise the first letter.

You’re now connected.

2. First, update your Timecode Buddy: wifi master

  • Restart.
Back in your Timecode Buddy’s WiFi menu, check that your network name has been found. It should also say ‘Connecting’. When complete, you’ll see ‘Connected’ displayed (this takes up to two minutes). Check your ‘WiFi: IP Address’ information screen to make sure your Timecode Buddy has picked up the new IP address from your router. If it has, you’re ready.
  • Scan for updates.
Under System Settings, scroll over and select ‘Check for Updates’. The updates will commence. This option only appears when the unit is in Infrastructure Mode.
  • Re-boot.
The system will automatically re-boot once the main program is loaded. Once it has re-logged on to your router it should continue with the update process (this takes up to two minutes). Please wait until the HTML, FPGA and TX code is loaded too. *If the message reports ‘Timed Out’ then please scroll through the systems menu and select ‘Check for Updates’ once again. Only when it reports ‘No Update needed’ all components are re-loaded back on.
  • Check.
Go back to ‘Systems Settings’ and check for updates again. It should say ‘Update not required.’
  • Switch to ad hoc mode. When the firmware is updated, verify in the WiFi setting that your Timecode Buddy: wifi master is back in Ad Hoc mode (default) and ready for use.

Your firmware for your Timecode Buddy: wifi master is updated.

3. Now, update your Timecode Buddy: mini tx

  • Connect your Buddies.
Switch you Timecode Buddy: wifi Master into RF mode and hit ‘Check for Updates’ on your Timecode Buddy: mini tx. Make sure both devices are on the same RF channel.
  • Update.
The asterisks will progress as the program is loaded. When complete the unit will re-boot.

You’ve just updated your Timecode Buddy: mini tx

More solid connection routines for connecting to WiFi routers for updating Firmware or Infrastructure use of multiple wifi master’s on the same network.
WiFi menu mode to output T/C on UDP port 4200 for Softron MovieRecorder (Mac OS X).
General bug fixes.
TCB4b v5.10 11/01/2013 Fixed bug with WiFi T/C sync output to iOS devices when on 23.98 and 29.97 FPS settings. Previously the visual T/C sync on the iOS device slowly slipped when on non-integer FPS settings.
Improved auto sensing of incoming FPS setting on BNC/LEMO input.
TCB4b v5.07(update) 06/12/2012 Same program version number but with 1)Updated HTML Buddy:webview config pages to reduce polling on wifi master. 2) Updated FPGA to correct DROP FRAME bug with LTC output. On previous release the LTC output was DF, but the DF flag was not set. This meant that receiving devices thought the T/C was Non Drop.
TCB4b v5.07 16/10/2012 New SWITCH ON procedure to stop accidental turn on in a kit bag/mixer bag. New SWITCH OFF procedure to stop accidental turn off by a camerman leaning on the knob when working handheld. Remove 1080i Double Frame rate from menu option (not a valid standard). Add information to 1080i Sync Type that this is also for PSF. Reduce the amount per second that the webpages ‘poll’ the TCB uP. This was causing the TCB to freeze occasionaly.
v5.04 21/05/2012 Latest version with Dual Load TV Sync menu option (for T-piece to two cameras). Modified TC Sync waveform to work with RED cameras.
